Having been a member of the council for some years, Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP has been elected vice-chair of the Council of the law reform and human rights organisation Justice which is chaired by the leading lawyer and Labour peer Baroness Helena Kennedy QC.

Sarah Ludford is Liberal Democrat MEP for London, the party's European justice and human rights spokeswoman and a qualified though non-practising barrister. She is a life peer, although as an MEP she cannot now be active in the Lords. Sarah Ludford said:

"It is a great honour to be made vice-chair of such a distinguished organisation dedicated to securing access to justice and upholding the rule of law. I believe that my European experience can particularly contribute to Justice's work, which is making an important contribution to improving the quality of judicial cooperation across the European Union, especially by upholding fair trial rights."

Baroness Ludford was elected to the position at the Justice annual general meeting. She is an experienced member of the European Parliament's civil liberties, justice & home affairs committee, and was previously vice-chair of the EP human rights sub-committee and its inquiry on extraordinary rendition.

JUSTICE is an all-party law reform and human rights group seeking to improve the legal system, including in cross-border EU cooperation. Conservative peer and lawyer Lord Hunt of Wirral was elected as the other vice-chair.
