Thames Water announced today that using poo to generate its electricity saved it a staggering £15m on electricity bills last year.
In 2008/09 Thames Water, which is under fire from campaigners and the European Commission for its massive discharge of sewage into the Thames, met 14% or its power needs from either burning sewage sludge or methane derived from it. Once the dried "poo cakes" have been used to generate electricity they are offered as fertiliser to farmers and landscapers, putting the waste to added beneficial use.
London Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford said:
"What a great initiative! Anything that stops raw sewage overflowing into the Thames is good news."
"It is not going to obviate the need for the super-sewer, but Liberal Democrats support energy from waste, so it's encouraging to know that our personal efforts can contribute to that!"
